As has been described in various articles in The Space Review (see “When ‘about time’ equals ‘too late’”, Octo“The engine problem”, Aug“About those scrapped Atlas ICBMs”, July 6, 2010), the Space Shuttle was developed to be the sole US launch vehicle that would be supported by the US Government.
